The Tower of Babel
Genesis 11: 1-9
After the flood, the earth was populated again. The whole earth was populated with the descendants of Shem, Ham and Japheth. At that time, the whole world shared one language so it is easy for people to communicate. The people traveled to the East and settled in a plain called the land of Shinar.
The people said to each another, “Let us make bricks and bake them completely.”
The people used stones as bricks and asphalts as mortars.
They said, “Let us make a city and tower that reach up to the sky. We will become famous and won’t be scattered to different places on earth.”
When God knew what the people are doing, he came down to see the city and tower that they were building.
God said, “The people are in one unity because they share one language. If the people had begun to do this, then nothing that they want to do can be stopped. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so that they won’t understand what each other are speaking.”
God went down to the earth and confused the language of the people. The people started to speak in different languages. Because they couldn’t understand each other, they stop building the city.
From there, God scattered the people abroad to different places on the face of the earth. This is why it is call the Tower of Babel. It was at Babel that God confused the language of the people and scattered them throughout the earth.
