The Lord Rejects Saul as King

1 Samuel 15:12-34

Samuel was told that Saul had gone to Carmel and proceeded to Gilgal to make a monument for himself.

When Samuel arrived, Saul said to him, “I had done all God had instructed me to do.”

Samuel replied, “Why then I could hear the sound of the sheep and cattle?”

Saul explained, “I destroyed everything but kept the best of their livestock to sacrifice to God.”

Samuel replied, “Did God want your sacrifices? To obey him is better than sacrifice.”

Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned against God. Nevertheless, please come back with me to worship God.”

Samuel said, “I will not go back with you.”

Saul replied, “I have sinned but please come back with me for the sake of honoring me before the elders.”

Then Samuel said, “Bring out King Agag to me.”

King Agag came in confidently and thought, “They surely won’t kill me now.”

Samuel took a knife and chopped King Agag into pieces.

After that, Samuel returned home to Ramah. From that day onwards, he never saw Saul again.
