Saul Murders the Priests at Nob
1 Samuel 22:6-20
Saul sat under the tamarisk tree at Gibeah and said to the people that had gathered around him, “Listen, men of Benjamin, did David give you any field or vineyards? Will he make you army commanders of his thousands or hundreds? Why have all of you collaborate together to betray me?”
Doeg said, “I saw David came to Ahimelech at Nob. Ahimelech inquired God for him. He also provided him food and gave him the sword of Goliath.”
Saul sent for Ahimelech the priest and his whole family to come to him.
They came to Saul and Saul said to Ahimelech, “Listen, Ahimelech. Why did you betrayed me by providing David with bread and a sword and inquired God for him?”
Ahimelech answered, “Isn’t David your most loyal servant? I have no idea what you are talking.”
Saul said, “You, Ahimelech and your whole family will surely die.”
Saul ordered his guards, “Kill everyone who had sided with David. They knew what they were talking about but they purposely hide from me.”
Saul’s guards were afraid of killing the priests of the Lord and did not dare to harm them in anyway.
Saul turned to Doeg and ordered him, “Kill the priests.”
Doeg obeyed Saul’s command. He turned and killed Ahimelech and all the priests with him.
On that day, he killed in total 85 priests. He also entered the city of Nob and killed everyone inside the town including the men, women, children, and livestock.
However, Abiathar managed to escape and ran to David. He reported to David what Saul had done to the priests at Nob.
