Jesus Appears on the Road to Emmaus
Luke 24:13-35
One day, two of Jesus’ disciples were walking down the road to a village called Emmaus. As they walked along, they discussed the crucifixion of Jesus which happened a few days ago.
Jesus came up and joined them on the road; however, the disciples did not recognize him.
Jesus asked them, “What are you discussing?”
They answered, “We are talking about Jesus of Nazareth. He was a powerful prophet who was mighty in words and deeds. He was handed to the chief priests and teachers of the law to be crucified, but we hope he is the Messiah who will redeem Israel. Today is the third day since all this took place. Some of our women went to the tomb early this morning, but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive.”
He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Didn’t the Christ have to suffer and then enter his glory?”
Jesus then began to explain to them all that were said in the scriptures concerning himself.
When they almost reach the village, Jesus acted as if he was going to continue on further. But the disciples urged him strongly, “Stay with us, it is getting dark.” So Jesus went in to stay with them.
When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. As he was breaking the bread, the eyes of the two disciples were opened. They recognized that it was Jesus and he then disappeared from their sight.
They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”
After that, they arose and returned to Jerusalem. They told the news to the eleven disciples saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how they recognized it was Jesus when he broke the bread.
