Herod Beheads John the Baptist
One day, John said to Herod, “It is not right for you to have Herodias, your brother, Philip’s wife.”
Herod was unhappy with what John told him so he had him locked up in the prison. Herodias wanted to kill him but she couldn’t because Herod feared John and protected him for he was a righteous man. It happened that it was Herod’s birthday and he gave a banquet for his high officials, military commanders and all the important people in Galilee.
On Herod’s birthday, Herodias came in to dance before him.
This pleased Herod so much that he said to her, “Ask me for anything. I will give you up to half of my kingdom.”
She went out and asked her mother, “What shall I ask for?”
She answered, “Ask him for the head of John, the Baptist on a platter.”
She hurried back in and told King Herod, “I want the head of John, the Baptist on a platter.”
King Herod felt distressed when he heard this, but he couldn’t refuse her in front of the people. He sent the executioner to behead John in the prison and bring his head on a platter. He presented it to Herodias who in turned gave it to her mother.
When John’s disciples learned about this, they came and carried his body and buried in a tomb.
